Being an Accounting Tutor

Sydney, 8 May 2017

So, last week, I got an email from my dormitory office. It says if they are looking for an accounting tutor for internal tutorial program they have. There was no one applied for that position, so they just offer the position to student residents like me who got at least Distinction on accounting last semester.

At first I didn't have any intention to apply this position until they emailed me the offer. Last semester, I was actually thinking to apply for the similar position to be a tutor in campus tutorial program. But, I fully concern that my sponsor does not allow me to work unless I work as teaching assistant or research assistant to campus. So last semester, before I applies for the position, I sent an email to my sponsor for a permission. But up to now, I didn't get any reply from them.

So, the offer I just got from my dorm was a blessing in disguise for me. Still I concern about my contract with my sponsor. So I consulted to some people whether or not I should accept this offer, including asking to one of chief officer of my sponsorship (but he didn't give any answer up to now either). Other people argue that it is a working to the campus (since the dorm is part of the campus, and all the administrative is part of campus organisation structure), and being a tutor is similar to be a teaching assistant. So, without further ado, I accepted the offer.

The application process was so quick and the fees are so good, and even better than last year position that I intended to apply. It is around $43 per hour which is fairly big for a casual work position. What makes it even better is that I only need to teach my student inside my dorm (I do not need to go out to campus), and the teaching format is personal face-to-face (not a class format). So I am thinking that I can actually earn a lot of money if I have a lot of student.

But, honestly, my main purpose is beyond the money. I think the living allowance from my sponsor is more than enough for me to' have a decent student life in here. I take the position since, firstly, I want to engage with the society, make friend and connection. I want to have extra experiences that I can write on my resume. Secondly, I love teaching, and I have been a peer tutor since I was in high school. Thirdly, Teaching means learning the subject as well as learning to be socialising and respecting others.

Hopefully everything is going to run smoothly. Even though this is my third times studying accounting in tertiary degree, and I have a nine-year working experience in accounting field, still, accounting courses in University of Sydney is very demanding for me. And, hopefully, I am not breaching the contract with my sponsor. I have tried to communicate with them but they didn't give me the answer. So, yeah... I hope it is a good beginning for me.
